Here are some of the events at which Einstein’s Daughters has shared FIRST with the community.
Wall Street Journal 2/10 - Two members of our team were interviewed over the phone about the "Hot Shots for Haiti" fundraiser we hosted at the San Diego FTC Regional. Our interviewer was doing research for an article focusing on innovative ways that individuals raised money for Haiti survivors; we explained our inspiration for "Hot Shots for Haiti" and that we held the fundraiser partly to remind students that, while it is easy to be caught up in the heat of competition, FIRST kids are trying to make the world a better place with science and technology. FIRST Day in San Diego 10/09 - This all-day event was hosted by Einstein's Daughters and several other local FIRST teams at the Air and Space Museum in Balboa Park in order to spread FIRST robotics to several hundred possible mentors, parents and kids in San Diego. AllCouncil Member Sherri Lightner re-presented the proclamation from the mayors and the event was featured in a local newspaper, the Carlsbad Sun. This is the first of many annual FIRST Days in San Diego!
EDC Annual Dinner 10/09 - We attended the San Diego Regional Economic Development Corp.'s annual dinner, at which Dean Kamen was the keynote speaker. More than 700 STEM professionals attended and witnessed us accept a check for FIRST.
Bot Birthday Party 9/09, 2/10 - Einstein's Daughters hosted their first robot-themed birthday party for a set of 5-year-old twin boys in September. The attendees drove robots and played games. Since then, we've other parties where we set up VEX bots for the kids to drive. The purpose of these parties is primarily to raise money for our team and for RISE; if you are interested in donating to our team and having us set up robots at your party, email us @ einsteinsdaughters@gmail.com!
Space Day 5/09 - This event was held at the Air and Space Museum in Balboa Park. Our team was one of six different San Diego robotics teams invited to present their bots to the public. We held a booth and were featured on KUSI news, a local TV news station.
Meeting with the Mayors 5/09 - Our team hosted an event at High Tech High during which met with Mayor Sanders of San Diego and Mayor Cox of Chula Vista; they mayors learned to drive our 08-09 competition robot, Roxie, and presented our team with a proclamation that declared October 17th FIRST Robotics Day in San Diego and Chula Vista!
NBC Spotlight 3/09 - Caitlin, Katie H, and Katie B were briefly interviewed on NBC and talked about FIRST, robotics and girls in science and engineering.
San Diego Science Festival 2/09, 4/09 - Einstein's Daughters was invited to represent FIRST at the San Diego Science Festival in Balboa Park. We were one of a handful of groups invited to present at the press conference for the event, and met numerous state and city officials including California Assemblyman Tom Torlakson and Lt. Gov. John Garamondi. We were also happy to attract some press attention and were featured on the evening news
Parent’s Night 2/09 - A gathering of parents and kids at the local elementary school, Curie Elementary We had our robot, an FLL robot and an FRC robot there as models. We demonstrated the robots and explained what FIRST is, and how to start a team.
Troop Meetings 1/09, 2/09, 3/09 - We've met with 2 boy scout troops and a brownie troop and taught them about the scientific method. They drive our "ambassador bots" and perform experiments!
Science Olympiads 1/09 - We mentored a team of 3 girls from Fancis Parker Elementary. Since their challenge involved a robot-themed competition using VEX bots, we were able to help them with their design and programming.
UC Rowbots 10/08-12/08 - We mentored this local FLL team and helped them with their robot and presentation for the judges.
School Supplies 10/08 - Our team collected several tons of school supplies for Hurricane Ike victims, including more than 370 notebooks and folders, 1280 pencils and pens, 40 backpacks, and 2300 index cards!
STEM Conference 8/08 - We participated in a conference held at a local high school; we spread the word of FIRST, demonstrated our robot, and gained contacts. We were also excited to be invited to be collaborators for the San Diego Science Festival!
SAIC Meeting 5/08 - "Science Applications International Corp. is a FORTUNE 500® scientific, engineering, and technology applications company that uses its deep domain knowledge to solve problems of vital importance to the nation and the world;" our team attended a meeting with some of their women engineers to encourage them to be involved in FIRST as mentors. They were very excited and we hope to work with them in the future.
Podcast 4/08 - We were featured in a podcast called “Meet Me at the Corner” heard by homeschoolers throughout the US.
Eggstravaganza 4/08 - An Easter egg hunt from Carmel Valley that attracts around 300 kids and parents every year. We used this opportunity to have the kids drive little square robots dressed up like bunnies.
FRC Competition Demo 3/08, 3/09 - Our team was invited to run the FTC booth at the San Diego FRC Regional competition.
Jenna Druck Foundation Workshop 3/08, 3/09, 3/10 - Einstein's Daughters has run workshops twice at this annual seminar for young women student leaders. We have taught about brainstorming and group cooperation in robotics.
Radio Interview 2/08 - We were interviewed by two local entrepreneurs (Barbara Bry and Neil Senturia) on their radio show “I’m There For You Baby.” Click the link to hear the podcast.
Newspaper Interview 2/08 - We were interviewed by the San Diego Union Tribune and featured in an article that reached thousands of readers throughout San Diego, helping to spread the word about FIRST.
California School Board Association 12/07 - Went to a conference of school board members from throughout California and talked about getting FTC started in schools. We demonstrated how our robot works.
Ruben H. Fleet Science Center Exhibition 11/07 - Set up a booth at the Science center and brought our robot to display and have the kids drive. At this robot exhibition we spoke with hundreds of people about FIRST and gave them information on starting new teams.
Clairemont Days 7/07 - Community celebration where we set up a booth to share the FIRST message, demonstrate our robot, and share our experience of FIRST.
San Diego County Fair 7/07 - We set up a booth where we shared the word of FIRST, demonstrated our robots and gave people information on starting an FLL or an FTC team.
Meeting with the Mayor of San Diego 7/07 - Einstein's Daughters and EMP, our brother team, visited the mayor and other city officials to talk about FIRST. We talked to the Mayor about how important it is to get FIRST programs established in more schools and asked him to try to have the FIRST World Festival hosted in San Diego.
UC Celebration 7/07, 7/08, 7/09 - A community celebration on the 4th of July that we participate in every year, during which we set up a booth and field to show robots. We also provided a sign up sheet for people who wanted to learn more about FIRST or start a team. At this celebration we also share the word of FIRST and have done things like set up a raffle to raise money so we could fund another all girls team. We have used the money we raise to provide grants for other teams -- like the all-girls Rock ‘n Roll Robotics and the Whitney High School team. Both of those teams went on to compete in Atlanta in 2008, 2009, and 2010.
School Visits 5/07, 1/08 - We have spoken to different classes about FIRST and the importance of cooperation when working in groups. We also show and let the kids drive one of our robots, Cookie as well as our ambassador botsi.
